Conditioning for the Hunt - Bird Ridge Trail

$0.00

Date: Monday, May 18th

Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Trail(s): Bird Ridge Trail, Turnagain Arm

Meet Up Location: Lower Parking Lot for Bird Creek Trail Parking Lot NOT Bird Ridge Trailhead Parking

Lot (Bigger parking and bathrooms are open at this lower lot – if you don’t see a bathroom, you are in the wrong parking lot!)

Parking: $5.00 per vehicle parking or a State Parks parking pass

Distance: ~2 miles (up to 5, but the plan is to only do 2 miles at the start of the summer for conditioning)

Intensity: Strenuous – but hike at your own pace, we’ll be stopping every 20 min and wait for folks

before starting again. I will be hiking at a 1 mph pace on this steep trail.

Elevation Change: Steep ~1500ft in 1 mile

Estimated Time to Complete: 2+ hours

Education Topic: First 20 minutes find your cardio zone pace in steep terrain. Then we can discuss safely hiking on rocky terrain (center of balance, up is usually easier than down, mini-switchbacks, rock features – with a geologist).

Hike Description: Halfway down Turnagain Arm in Chugach State Park, this trail follows a rocky ridgeline straight up a mountain. Calves, Quads, and Cardio! It’s early in the season so we aren’t going to push the distance on this one. It’s about getting some stretch and weight on those joints safely before you build up to the longer sheep/goat hunting hikes. It is mostly protected, but where it’s not expect windy, cold conditions.

(Note: There are steep trails closer to town, but the avalanche danger & activity is considerable with all the heavy rainfall. This trail while farther away is safely out of avalanche danger and is dry. Further into summer we’ll hike the steeps closer into town for the Mountain Huntresses!)
